Raising the awareness level
Unilever Nigeria Plc has pledged N78.6M to UNICEF for Hand Wash In Schools Campaign in Nigeria for 3 years (2005 –2007). The campaign which will cover 111 Local Government Areas in Nigeria and reach about one million pupils, is aimed at raising the level of awareness of the link between poor hygiene/sanitation and incident of poor health. It is also aimed at the promotion of positive behavioural changes that should result in improved standard of hygiene/sanitation among pupils in particular and Nigerian communities in general.
Speaking at the formal launch of the Campaign, where the first instalment cheque of N20.6M was presented to UNICEF, Mrs. Fidelia Osime, Unilever’s Human Resources Director said that Unilever is collaborating with UNICEF on this important aspect of the School Hygiene Programme in Nigeria because of the company’s concern for the improvement of the level of hygiene in Nigeria. She stated that Unilever Nigeria is aware of the low level of hygiene in Nigeria and its attendant negative impact on the survival and development of children and by implication, the larger society.
The formal launch, which took place in Karshi Primary School, Karshi, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja Nigeria on Friday 7 October, was chaired by the Hon. Minister of the Federal Capital Territory; Mallam Nasir El-Rufai represented by the Secretary for Health and Human Services Hajia Amina Bala Zakari. In his remarks he said that Nigerians are very appreciative of Unilever’s kind gestures on the Hand Washing Campaign. In her remarks while receiving the cheque on behalf of UNICEF, Mrs. Mahera Khatun, Deputy Country Representative of UNICEF in Nigeria, said that Unilever has demonstrated again that it is a children friendly organisation usually showing that it cares about people’s quality of life.
